Nothing but Time

A friend said that they think time is an interesting subject. I agree wholeheartedly. Time is mysterious, nobody is sure what will happen in the future. A second from now, a year from now, a decade now. A fog obscures our view, making the thought of what might happen terrifying. And, the past is just as murky, isn't it? Do we really know what happened a minute ago? A year ago? A decade ago? We are still ignorant to events that happened during our time. The past is just as terrifying as the future.
And yet, the present may be more frightening than them both.

But lets talk about music.
I think that perhaps, music reflects not the person, but the person's interests. Humans are complex creatures, and their minds are indescribable. To say that a person's music taste reflects who they really are might be untrue. Possibly. Probably. Unprobably. I'm not sure. Nobody is, I think. For example, a very polite young lady might listen to Marilyn Manson. I like the name Martha for her. Some people wouldn't expect Martha to listen to Marilyn Manson, although it's not too far-fetched. Martha always tries to be polite and kind. People might say that Marilyn Manson's people are for wicked and twisted people. But that's not who Martha really is. Martha is very sweet.
But I do know, or maybe I just think I know, that music reflects interests. Or it seems like it, for the most part.
Maybe Martha just likes creepy things. She is not creepy herself, but maybe she has a vast collection of horror movies.
Perhaps Martha really did seem like the stereotypical kind of person who listens to Marilyn Manson's music at one point. She might have had a little phase in grade eight where she wore a lot of black in summer, and she started to listen to Marilyn Manson's music, because she thought it really did represent her true self at the time. It's been a few years, and although all the black is stored in a closet, she still listens to the music because she genuinely likes it.
Or maybe her music taste doesn't reflect her interests. Maybe she just likes it to likes it.
Best not to think about this for too long, I suppose.
Next question.
I don't see why we can't call rap and dubstep music. I think it's music just like rock or classical. Although the genres are very different, they all have a rhythm. I think I might describe music as that. Something that has a rhythm. But really, music can be whatever you want it to be.
My experiences with music have vastly changed throughout the years. I am very much into indie and indie rock right now, I'd kill to see Florence + the Machine and Metric live. But a few years ago, I was incredibly into techno music, electronica, those kind of genres. When I think back, most of my favourite songs didn't have words, I think.
And before that, I just didn't care about music.
Why have my opinions changed? To be honest, I don't know. I just kept growing. Do I agree with the subjects and lyrics of the songs? Well, when Marina Diamandis sings "Girls they never befriend me'cause I fall asleep when they speak of all the calories they eat" I roll my eyes, so not all subjects, no.
Music is a very wide subject. Very interesting. Less mysterious than time, though.
So how was my blogging? And I'd like to know about your own music tastes. Tell me in the comments and suggest a topic for my next post. But I don't know if I'll answer it right away. Maybe I'll make a different post first.
Also, the title of this post is a Metric song. Did you catch that?
Thank you very much.

Fantastic, as always.

I, too, enjoy "indie" music. More specifically, just folk/acoustic sounding music and/or punk that people argue over whether or not it is truly "indie." I do not personally care what people think, I simply enjoy the music. Two bands who sound similar but are far different that I enjoy are The Mountain Goats and Andrew Jackson Jihad. The first has many literary and religious allusions in their songs with well woven lyrics while the latter writes songs from the heart with a raw and more emotional feel. Both, in my opinion, are very powerful and effective in their song writing; their songs can really make you feel something. It is amazing.

This time around, you should write whatever you feel like. I suggest too much!

Looking forward to the next post. Thank.
